Winches

A number of different winches were fitted to land rovers including mechanical, hydraulic and electric varieties. I plan to feature the different types vintage winches that would have been fitted to rovers during the 50s, 60s, and 70s

This is the Hickey Sidewinder and was offered by Hickey Industries in the United States for a number of Four wheel drive vehicles in the 60s and 70s including land rovers. Here you can see the unique design and original mount hickey offered for series rovers. This is an unusual winch.

This is an aero parts capstan winch. It runs of the engine crankshaft.

This is a fairey capstan winch. It is very similar to the aero parts model.

This is the back of the Koenig Crank driven winch with cab controls. Made in Texas, it was optional equipment on US spec rovers. However, I have seen it originally fitted to trucks as old as 1955.

Heres the Koenig Crank driven winch without the cab controls. Note the lack of the elongated control levers.

This is a pic of a PTO driven Joenig winch. Here you can see the entire layout.

Here is a Ramsey PTO winch fitted to a series 2a. Less comon than the koenig pto, but still relatively comon.

Heres the entire Ramsey PTO winch setup. The components are all different from the Koenig, but not drasticly so. Note the flange on the back of the PTO unit, this means you can run equipment off the rear of this PTO as well as the front. Much cooler than the koenig unit which only has a forward facing shaft.

This is the Land Rover Mk2 Hydraulic winch. Its very hard to come by in the US. However, it was fitted to a number of SIIA and SIIB forward controls.

 Here is a shot of a Bamford Smith PTO winch rated at 10K pounds. It was fitted to a number of Austrialian military vehicles. Im not sure if it was available on the civilian market or not. It looks like a serious piece of equipment.

Here is a warn 8074 which was a dealer option in the United States. This is refered to as the belview model because it was developed by the belview winch company which was later purchased by warn. The winch that made Warn famous wasnt even developed by them!

This is a tension Nokken winch or Nokke/Nokken vinsj in Norwegian as fitted to a 101 FC. These were standard issue for a number military forward controls. They can pull cable in both directions. Neat winches. They were made by Hordaland Mekaniske Verksted in Norway. I have the manual in PDF format HERE

This is the Mayflower Automotive Products PTO winch. Later rebadged by fairey this winch is a workhorse.

This is a later Rover Hydraulic winch. Im unsure if it was actually made by rover or another firm. These were available as optional equipment through rover dealers during series three production. I love the fairlead. I refer to them as rover mk 3 hyraulic winches though Im not sure thats correct nomenclature.

 Here is another photo of the late rover hydraulic. This one fitted to an ex-military series three. Note how the fairlead support frames the crank start apperature. Very cool!!

This is the turner crank driven drum winch. This is one of very few crank-driven drum winches made for the series land rover. Cool winch but somewhat fragile.
